--Thanks to programs like the Mission of Hope and others, the children at the Boys & Girls Club had gifts at Christmas, plus an extra added surprise: During the toy delivery to Burchfield School, ALQI was presented with 10 guitars, 1 banjo, and 1 violin for the B&G music lesson program. Are you a possible volunteer that can spend at least 1 hour a week at the Club giving lessons? Think of the possibilities…and the satisfaction. Think of the future of these boys & girls. Call George now!

--The annual raffle for the Boys & Girls Club is being organized. This year it will be a reverse raffle. Names will be drawn out with numerous prizes given-but the last name drawn wins the grand prize. Watch for more info. This will be exciting and a good way to donate to the B&G Club of Scott County.

The number to put on your calendar to call in November is:

569-5938
--If you went in either door of Wal-Mart during December this year, you may have noticed the stands were unattended much of the time. Having said that, there were lots of people who DID help. I wish I had room to list them. We hope you will please mark your calendar NOW to participate in the bell ringing for 2008. Pencil in on November l2 to call the ALQI office and inquire about which "whole" DAY during December your office, your family, friends, etc. will work one of the doors. You will be blessed-and watch office morale go UP!
-\-Where does this money go and why is the need so great? It is divided up between the 12 months and distributed for past due utility bills. This office sees people every day who are struggling to pay basic bills for their families. We meet with people who have had their electric/gas/water turned off because of lack of payment of the bills. We have seen large families move in with relatives until they could find the money to again heat their homes.
--The goal for Bell Ringing for 2007 was $15,000. We collected $9,200.00 toward that goal.
--If you were one of the people who "intended" to ring the bell this year but would still like to help someone who needs it, you may send a check to the Salvation Army (address at left) You will be helping some parents keep their children warm or a roof over their heads. FYI: 20% of collected funds are sent to Salvation Army Headquarters-who return a portion for our programs' use. The rest stays here in the county and absolutely no administrative or overhead funds are taken out. ALQI absorbs all the costs that go with the program. And………absolutely NO $500 checks are turned away!
--Thanks to a grant written by ALQI, $5,000 provided clothes and toys to needy families for Christmas.

Appalachian Relief Fund

Mary Patterson
Sevierville, TN

--Mary and her team visited the Winfield Baptist Church 12-19-07 to help the 125+ children pick out toys and new underwear that she and the church had provided. Thanks to the pastor for traveling to Sevierville to bring her and two friends to Winfield-and returning them that night!!! Mary presented a $500 check to pay for the last truck of food delivered by Second Harvest.

--The nominations are now ope

Mission of Hope

Emmette Thompson
Executive Director

--They did it again! Made the children of Scott County really, really know there is a Santa Clause-and we were amazed that his helpers look like volunteers of the Mission of Hope. You can't help but "tear up" when you hear the squeals of the children and see their excitement. It is fantastic!

Data Program
--Thanks for the cooperation of the two school systems in Scott County in collecting data to improve the health of the students here. Unofficial results of recent dental screening in 8 schools:
2,809 students; 2,456 screened; 211 absent; 242 refused.
67 #1 - abscess or pain and needs immediate attention
428 #2 - can see an obvious cavity
509 #3 - needs x-rays - may have dental needs
1,352 #4 - teeth look great
In comparison: In 2004-2005 school year, we had 145 #1's. Data also show that school attendance has improved over previous years. This is one of our goals.
--Scott County Schools are leading the way in data gathering. This will prove to be so important in the overall well being of the students. I am constantly amazed at how Dr. Hemmelgarn can look at the numbers and tell you what is happening. We want to again thank him, UT and the University of Oak Ridge Epidemiology Group. We hope to soon be looking for national grants as a result of the data gathering.
